About this tour

Take a trip back in time to the 1850s with a visit to Sovereign Hill, a former gold rush town in Ballarat and just a short trip away from Melbourne.

  • Experience life as it was during the gold rush period in Australia
  • Enjoy a convenient and comfortable roundtrip bus transfer from Melbourne to Sovereign Hill
  • Go for a horse-drawn carriage ride, panhandle for gold, and explore the preserved architecture, history, and culture at your own pace

— What You Can Expect —

Ballarat, a famous 19th-century gold-mining city, is host to the preserved town of Sovereign Hill. Located in the Golden Point suburb of Ballarat, Sovereign Hill is an open-air museum highlighting the first ten years of its gold rush. Gold was first discovered there in 1851, and today it is known for hosting the richest alluvial gold rush in the world. Many of the world’s largest gold nuggets, in fact, came from Ballarat.

Tour the site’s antiques, art, preserved documents, machinery, livestock, horse-drawn carriages, and more devices that are remnants of the gold rush era. Additionally, take part in the site’s many attractions such as panhandling for gold at the town’s winding creek. Witness the Gold Pour, real-time processing of $100,000 gold melted into a three-kilogram bullion bar.

On the gold mine tour, listen to stories about the first gold found, the discovery of the Welcome Nugget. You’ll also learn stories of mining disasters on top of all the riches the make up the town’s founding.

Make sure to tour Main Street’s many shops: from blacksmiths to stables, photo studios to jeweller shops, and more, Sovereign Hill offers many period-appropriate attractions to make you feel as if you are rediscovering the gold rush.

To make the most of your visit, here are some additional attractions:

  • Gold panning by the creek (any gold flakes panned can be taken as a souvenir)
  • Mine-cart ride into the underground mine (additional fees apply)
  • Performances in town such as the Redguard performance
  • Horse-drawn carriage ride (additional fees apply)
