— Itinerary —

  • Kokeizan Eiho-ji Temple (虎渓山 永保寺)
A well-known Zen meditation temple. It was given the mountain name “Kokeizan” because it resembled the valley of Mt. Lu (廬山) in China. The garden is a national scenic spot, and the Kannondo (観音堂) and Kaisando (開山堂) are designated as national treasures. See the city’s natural landmark, a 700-year-old ginkgo tree in front of the main hall. Admire the ceramic lantern with Shino and Oribe glaze.
  • Enakyo George (恵那峡)
A man-made lake with a spectacular view from the observatory. It is a lake formed by the construction of a dam. Take beautiful shots of both the emerald green water and the red bridge from this location.
  • Tsumago (妻籠)
Spend your free time in this town exploring. It is well-known as Japan’s first Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Walk around freely and find wonderful places for relaxation.
  • “Magome (馬籠)
See how old Japanese buildings flank the road. Magome-juku (馬籠宿), is a post-town on the Nakasendo (中山道), through which many people passed during the Edo era. Magome-juku is also known as a location associated with Toson Shimazaki (島崎藤村). The Toson Memorial Museum, which was Toson Shimazaki’s birthplace, still serves as the Magome-juku headquarters.
